Hidden Messages in Music (...and the not so hidden ones!)

I find it important to consider the intent and the content of music, however, it is not always easy to determine a composers intent and at times a song's true content is not easily seen either.

I grew up listening to all kinds of music and in high school I was influenced and listened to Led Zeppelin, Kiss, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith etc... and that was my environment at the time I attended the American school of Brasilia.

I do not particularly listen to these groups today, I guess that was a phase in my life, however, there are some songs I still like such as Stairway to Heaven by English rock band Led Zeppelin. (It is interesting that I liked the song for the melody and not the lyrics, for in the early 70's I did not speak English and did not understand what was being said. It was the music that I liked. I find it that today I still am drawn by the music and don't always listen to the lyrics. Does that happen to you?)

What I found interesting but not shocking is that some of these songs we love to hear and play over and over again, may contain hidden messages.

In the case of Stairway to Heaven, I learned decades ago, it contains a satanic message when part of the song is played backwards.

The alledged "backward masking", which occurs during the middle section of the song ("If there's a bustle in your Hedgerow, don't be alarmed now..."), when played backwards, was to contain the Satanic references "Here's to my sweet Satan and "I sing because I live with Satan".

Here is another alledged message in the same song:

Oh here's to my sweet Satan.
The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan.
He will give those with him 666.
There was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad Satan

The lyrics were written by Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant who says were partly spontaneously improvised. So was it a coincidence? Not sure...

1983 interview in Musician magazine, Robert Plant stated: "To me it's very sad, because 'Stairway to Heaven' was written with every best intention, and as far as reversing tapes and putting messages on the end, that's not my idea of making music."

Just recently while visiting friends, we were discussing some current videos of today's artists where if it was not bad enough that the lyrics are terrible, they too contained disturbing hidden messages.

If you Google Beyonce, Jay Z, Rhianna, The Beatles hidden messages you can see for yourself. I chose not to post any of it here.

Were you aware of this? Does it shock you? Does it bother you?

Well... it is what it is but I wonder how many artists realize the songs they sing contain these hidden messages and wonder if they would object to singing them. I also wonder if these subliminal messages only detected in reverse, affect us in any way...

Anyway, this is not intended to turn into a religious debate, just a thought and I was wondering what you thought about the subject.
